How Often Should you Replace your Pillows, Sheets and Mattress Protectors?

We've all got a few things in our hands that we maintain for far too long. Holding on to keepsakes can be a wonderful trait, except when it comes to your bedding accessories. Whether it's that antique table from Grandma that's been with you since your first apartment in college or a handmade quilt you've curled up in since you were five years old, holding onto keepsakes can be a wonderful trait.

Pillows

When it comes to updating bedding and bedding accessories, bed pillows are sometimes neglected. Like all other bed linens, Pillows lose their firmness and ability to appropriately support your neck and spine with use. With enough head and neck support from a correctly contoured pillow, a huge number of uncomfortable aches and pains associated with sleep can be alleviated.

Pillows should be replaced every one to two years, or whenever you notice a lack of support when lying down. If you suffer from allergies, you should replace your pillow every six months or get a pillow protector to prevent allergens from accumulating in your pillow.

Mattress Protectors

Mattress covers, also known as mattress encasements, have two functions: they help prevent stains on your mattress from undesired substances or liquids, and they also help limit the number of allergens and dust mites that can build up over time. By keeping moisture from entering your mattress, you can extend the life of your mattress and keep materials from breaking down prematurely.

To keep your mattress protector in good form, wash it with your sheets on a regular basis and replace it every one to two years unless it shows signs of ordinary wear and tears. Your mattress protector's holes and worn places are clear indicators that it's time to replace it.

Bedding & Sheets

You may believe that your favourite set of bed sheets is still breaking in after years of use. Stains, frayed hems, and colour fading are all symptoms that your sheets need to be replaced. The frequency with which you wash and dry your sheets, as well as the material and thread count of the sheets you use, will determine when you start to notice these symptoms.

Cheaper materials will wear out faster, resulting in less usage of your favourite pair of sheets. Here, it's all about quality. Sheets should be replaced every two years and washed every one to two weeks, as a general rule.

Comforters and Duvet Covers

The majority of us do not wash our duvets or comforters on a regular basis. Bedspreads, in reality, should be washed every few months and at least twice a year. Like the rest of your bedding, Duvets should be replaced every five years due to sweat and skin cells. If you want to get a little more use out of your bedspread, use a duvet cover and wash them regularly.
